Peter stood for the General Election in 1981. He was elected to the Board of Education in the 1982 election and was elected as an MHK in 1985 for the Middle Sheading. Since 1986 he has been an MHK for Onchan and has been at the forefront of the development of many policies which have become Government policy a number of years after he raised them. Over the last 20 years he has been in the vanguard of politics trying to put audit and accountability into the systems of Government and promoting many of the issues for social care and inclusion in a caring and prosperous society.

Pressed for improvements in the Government mortgage scheme for first-time buyers:
Introduction of a hospital complaints procedure with an independent panel:
The pegging of prescription and dental charges:
Pushed for the establishment of the Public Inquiry into government's handling of the development at Mount Murray:
Secured a 40% increase in the Consultant staffing at the hospital:
Finalised plans for a major new all-Island water treatment works in Douglas:
Kept the pressure on Government to address the Issues related to drug-abuse:
Kept the issue of a Secondary School for Onchan alive .
